AME Responds to Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy Announcement

Vancouver, B.C. – February 17, 2026 Canada’s new Defence Industrial Strategy rightly recognizes that the world has become more volatile and dangerous, and it is more important than ever that Canada be ready and able to defend our territory, our people, and our values. A core pillar of this plan is ensuring reliable access to critical minerals through domestic production and stockpiling from trusted allies.

“Canada’s mineral explorers are up to the task,” said AME President and CEO Todd Stone. “Our economic sovereignty depends on more mineral exploration. Without exploration, there are no mines. Without mines, there are no jobs. Without jobs, there is no economic future.”

From advanced aerospace systems and munitions to secure digital infrastructure and energy systems, modern defence depends on reliable access to responsibly sourced minerals. The Strategy’s commitment to expand production, processing, stockpiling and allied coordination is an important step toward strengthening Canada’s supply chain security and economic resilience.

British Columbia plays a central role in this national effort. Our province is home to world-class mineral deposits, innovative exploration companies, and projects that are ready to develop.

The Association for Mineral Exploration (AME) looks forward engaging on the Department of National Defence on its strategy to expand the production, processing, stockpiling, and procurement of defence-critical minerals, while supporting coordinated action with allies through initiatives such as the G7 Critical Minerals Production Alliance and NATO stockpiling efforts.

A strong mineral economy underpins a strong modern economy. It also underpins a secure nation.

As Canada accelerates investment in defence and industrial capacity, we must ensure that permitting, infrastructure, workforce development and capital access keep pace. Exploration is where it all begins.

Canada has the resources. We have the expertise. Now we need to work together to create a future with more Minerals for Tomorrow.
